Agenda
Objectives
To establish a best/good practice framework for radiometric and spectral calibration and validation in support of spaceborne imaging spectroscopy missions.
Outcomes
- A white paper on radiometric and spectral calibration and validation specifically related to imaging spectroscopy missions, to be published in IEEE TGRS.
- An initial list of recommendations for best practice for radiometric and spectral calibration and validation of imaging spectroscopy sensors to be presented at a workshop in association with IGARSS, Beijing.
- An initial list of recommendations for sematic mapping between terminologies, data and metadata standards for imaging spectroscopy sensors to be presented at a workshop in association with IGARSS, Beijing.
- An initial list of recommendations for best practice method/protocol for vicarious calibration of imaging spectroscopy sensors and instrumentation requirements to be presented at a workshop in association with IGARSS, Beijing. These protocols will be trial and refined at an in-field training exercise at the Chinese RadCalNet site, Baotou from which material will be gathered for the next part of this calibration and validation initiative to provide an online training module for the imaging spectroscopy community.
Tasks
Specifically, the tasks that would be undertaken at the workshop would be to:
- Review existing, if necessary provide new definition, and consolidate of terminology related to the calibration and validation of imaging spectroscopy sensors;
- Summary of recent reviews/audits of terminology conducted by EUFAR, space agencies, CEOS and, other ad-hoc currently accepted terminology;
- Develop a framework for the semantic mapping (vocabulary inter-changeability) between the terminologies;
- Document gaps and new definitions that need to be accounted for.
- Review existing, if necessary provide new definition, and consolidate of data/metadata standards related to the calibration and validation of imaging spectroscopy sensors;
- Summary of image data standard from EUFAR and other best standards;
- Summary of ground spectral metadata standard from TERN biophysical measurements/Rasiash – Specchio/aus-specchio, ECOSIS, DLR, others;
- Can we close the gap and harmonise between ground and image metadata standards. For example, to enable the delivery of image and associate vicarious cal data as a package;
- Importance of referencing originators of data – DOI?
- Review of current best practice protocols for vicarious calibration (including the use of the moon) and related laboratory calibration, instrumentation requirements and site selection criteria, and document gaps or extensions required specifically for imaging spectroscopy missions. Recommend a base practice protocol/method building on previous work to be trialled/tested at a RadCalNet site (Baotou) concurrent with IGARSS in Beijing with the long term view of building a online training module;
- Summary of selection criteria and methods for selection of vicarious calibration targets, currently accepted best practice field measurement protocols – CEOS, EUFAR, COST, USGS, recommendations of instrumentation requirements;
- Summary of current best practice for instrument calibration to achieve traceability. What are practical acceptable levels of uncertainties? Are they different for different applications?
- Provide a harmonise set of protocols, document the gaps and recommendations for best practice;
- Develop material together with assigned tasks and responsibilities and a list of field instrumentations required for training at Boatou and future online training module;
