About the Summer School
Since 2016, this summer school has taken place annually under support of GRSS. Its influence has grown steadily including 1) attracting thousands of participants (students and young professionals) in China and IEEE R10 (Asia-Pacific Region) and educating the new generation of geoscience and remote sensing scientists for the state-of-the-art physics-based remote sensing techniques, 2) playing an important role in recruiting new IEEE GRSS members each year. During the past ten years, this school has also become a sustained channel where the recruited/retained GRSS members, particularly student members later continue their engagement in IGARSS, GRSS publications, and Technical Committees, thus forming a pipeline that connects early education, professional membership, and long-term academic contributions. With its hybrid format, combining in-person and wide-scale online participation, the summer school amplifies GRSS outreach beyond traditional conferences and has become the flagship summer school of the MIRS TC, significantly increasing GRSS’s visibility and impact in China and the most rapidly growing R10 region.
The objectives of this summer school are to bring together the world-renowned scientists (e.g., members from the MIRS TC) to educate the future generation of remote sensing scientists though lectures and discussions of the current state-of-the-art remote sensing theory and techniques, with an emphasis on models and inversion techniques for the earth science including atmosphere, land and ocean. The 2026 summer school will be the 10th school and continue to serve as the MIRS TC summer school. As the 10th anniversary, it will represent a milestone opportunity to celebrate its achievements and further expand GRSS’s influence.
