David Kunkee

GRSS President 2021-2022

David Kunkee received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, in 1995. In 1995, he also joined The Aerospace Corporation, El Segundo, CA, USA, where he is currently the Senior Project Leader with the Sensor Systems Subdivision. From 2002 to 2005, he was the Associate Director of the Radar and Signal Systems Department, at The Aerospace Corporation. Dr. Kunkee was on several review boards in support of space-based sensors for environmental monitoring and associated mission development. From 2010 to 2014, he was a member of the Environmental Satellite Systems Division as part of the Defense Weather Satellite System and Weather System Follow-on program offices. From 2006 to 2010, he was a member of the National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Integrated Program Office (IPO), and led the Aerospace Microwave Sensors and Data Products Department with the NPOESS IPO.

He was previously the President (2021-2022), Vice-President of Professional Activities and Vice-President of Meetings and Symposia for the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). He was the General Co-Chair for the 2017 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) and the Co-Chair for the Technical Program Committee for the 2010 and 2023 IGARSS. From 2007 to 2009, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the GRSS Newsletter. He was a Guest Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, and the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing. He is also a past Chair of the GRSS Technical Committee on Frequency Allocations in Remote Sensing. He is currently the Chair of USNC-URSI Commission F and was on the National Academies’ Committee on Radio Frequencies including its Committee on Scientific Use of the Radio Spectrum.
