Rui Li is from the beautiful Chinese coastal city of Weihai in Shandong Province. He is currently a PhD student at the Key Laboratory for Information Science of Electromagnetic Waves (MoE) at Fudan University in Shanghai. Rui received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Information Science and Technology from Xidian University. He enjoys playing table tennis and takes part in music playing the classical guitar. He joined GRSS in 2022 during the second semester of his PhD program.

Why did you decide to join GRSS?

My advisor, Prof. Feng Xu, and my senior colleague, Sijia Lu, who was the former chair of our student branch chapter, provided valuable academic guidance and encouraged me to join. GRSS is an excellent platform to connect with professionals in the field. After learning more about the structure of GRSS, I realized I could also contribute through our student branch chapter.

How do you expect your GRSS experiences to assist you in current academic pursuits?

GRSS journals and conferences help me stay updated with the latest research frontiers. The platform also provides opportunities to publish my work, exchange ideas, and broaden my academic influence. In the future, I also hope to serve as a reviewer, which would allow me to interact with peers and further refine my academic perspective.

What are specific GRSS activities that you plan to take advantage of?

I actively participate in academic conferences such as IGARSS 2024 and 2025 to explore new ideas and technologies. I also value student branch chapter activities to broaden my horizons, improve my leadership skills, and seek collaborations. I plan to strengthen my engagement with GRSS Technical Committees as well.

Long term, how do you anticipate GRSS will benefit your professional career?

Beyond my involvement in our student branch chapter, I am also in the process of joining the GRSS Chapters Committee. The connections I build and the experiences I gain will provide valuable guidance for my professional career and create more opportunities for development.

Has your experience in GRSS so far differed from what you expected?

At first, I did not expect that I would become so involved in our student branch chapter. Over time, I grew from a volunteer to vice-chair and now chair, working with my peers to build a strong team. I am grateful that our collective efforts were recognized with the IEEE GRSS 2025 Student Branch Chapter Excellence Award.

At what upcoming GRSS events can people expect to meet you? (Presenting a paper?)

Besides IGARSS, I also hope to work with my student branch chapter to organize sessions at GRSS-sponsored conferences in China, where I plan to continue presenting my research.

What words of encouragement would you offer others who are considering joining GRSS?

GRSS is a global platform full of opportunities. Join us, and let’s contribute together!
