In Memoriam, Professor Luciano Alparone

Professor Luciano Alparone (1960–2026) devoted his life to advancing signal and image processing for remote sensing while inspiring generations of students, collaborators, and colleagues. Born in Florence, Italy, he remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his career, earning both the Laurea degree (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering (1985) and the Ph.D. degree (1990) from the University of Florence.

Following a postdoctoral research fellowship, he joined the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications of the University of Florence in 1992, where he built his entire academic career. Over more than three decades of service, he helped shape the Department of Information Engineering (DINFO), becoming Full Professor in 2021 and serving as Head of the Signal Processing and Telecommunications Laboratory. His international collaborations included research appointments at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, and the Tampere International Centre for Signal Processing, Finland, further strengthening his global scientific network.

Professor Alparone’s research made lasting contributions to data compression for remote sensing and medical imaging, multiresolution image analysis, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing, and, above all, multisensor data fusion. He authored more than 300 scientific publications that have been cited approximately 14,000 times with an h-index of 56, reflecting the broad and enduring influence of his work. Among his many scientific accomplishments, he received the 2004 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters Prize Paper Award for the landmark paper “A global quality measurement of pan-sharpened multispectral imagery,” which established one of the most widely adopted quality assessment methodologies for pansharpening.

Within our Society, Professor Alparone was a highly respected and dedicated contributor. His expertise helped shape the development of the Data Fusion Technical Committee, and he was among the key organizers and evaluators of the inaugural IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest in 2006. That pioneering initiative laid the foundation for what has become one of our Society’s most successful and influential community benchmarks, fostering collaboration, innovation, and rigorous evaluation of data fusion methodologies across the international remote sensing community.

Beyond his outstanding scientific achievements, Luciano will be remembered for his generosity, humility, and unwavering commitment to mentoring young researchers. He combined scientific excellence with uncommon personal qualities, making him an inspiring teacher, a trusted collaborator, and a cherished friend. His guidance, kindness, and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working with him.

His passing is a profound loss for our Society and the international remote sensing and data fusion community. His scientific contributions will continue to influence the field for years to come, while his integrity, mentorship, and humanity will remain an enduring source of inspiration for colleagues, students, and friends.
