IN FOCUS: An Invitation to IGARSS 2025
By Joanne Van Voorhis
The International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) 2025 is poised to be a significant event in the realm of Earth Observation and remote sensing. Scheduled from August 3 to 8, 2025, in Brisbane, Australia, the 45th edition of the symposium is themed “One Earth,” and will address global environmental challenges through collaborative solutions leveraging remote sensing technologies. The event serves as a forum for IGARSS attendees to collaborate both regionally and globally throughout the various scheduled technical and social programs.
One Earth
“The theme of our conference, One Earth, celebrates the power of global collaboration and its vital importance to benefit our entire planet,” says Dr. Jocelyn Chanussot, Research Director, INRIA, Grenoble, France, and Co-Chair of the event. The theme underscores the critical role of remote sensing in understanding and mitigating environmental issues that transcend national boundaries. By fostering international cooperation, IGARSS 2025 seeks to develop global strategies for safeguarding our planet. The symposium will cover a broad spectrum of topics, including imaging and processing techniques, remote sensing data analysis, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in geosciences.
Comprehensive Technical Program
The conference is intended to provide a platform for delegates to present and listen to the latest developments in Earth observation, with a particular emphasis to inspire the next generation of researchers and practitioners. Accordingly, the organizing committee has worked hard to “assemble sessions that are both informative and inspiring,” Chanussot adds. “Attendees will have the opportunity to connect both with fellow researchers and industry leaders.” The IGARSS 2025 technical program features a variety of sessions designed to cater to the diverse interests of the remote sensing community, including:
- Plenary Sessions: Insights from leading experts on the current state and future directions of geoscience and remote sensing.
- Technical Sessions: Presentations and discussions on cutting-edge research and technological advancements.
- Community-Contributed Sessions: Focused discussions on specialized topics, encouraging community engagement and knowledge sharing.
- Tutorials and Workshops: Educational sessions aimed at enhancing skills and understanding of emerging tools and methodologies.
“One of the highlights of the technical program explores the use of AI in addressing Earth’s problems, especially around important topics like wildfire, flooding and coral bleaching,” explains Dr. Jeffrey Walker, Co-Chair of the event and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University. “The topics for Community-Contributed Sessions, Workshops and Tutorials span from AI & Big Data to upcoming satellite missions, spanning all aspects of Earth observation, from the land and ocean to the atmosphere,” he adds.
Registration Now Open
Registration for IGARSS 2025 opened April 11, 2025. Early registration is encouraged to take advantage of early registration discounts which are available until May 7. Full and partial day rates for Tutorial sessions are also offered at reduced fees before May 7.
