Women in Latin America (WiLATAM)
ABOUT US
GRSS Women in Latin America (WiLATAM) initiative was founded within the Inspire, Develop, Empower, and Advance (IDEA) committee of IEEE’s Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). This regional initiative focused on empowering women in geoscience and remote sensing communities across Latin America. Built on collaboration and regional engagement, WiLATAM brings together students, early-career researchers, and experienced professionals to foster connections, share knowledge, and support professional development.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to support the growth and development of the female community in geosciences and remote sensing in Latin America by strengthening professional networks and enhancing regional collaboration, promoting exchange in Spanish and Portuguese. The initiative builds on existing networks, collaborations and events in Region 9 to create opportunities for learning, exchange and visibility. Through activities such as mentoring, training sessions and community-driven events, WiLATAM aims to build a more connected and dynamic regional network, in line with the overall mission of GRSS.
We aim to:
- Facilitate mentoring and knowledge exchange at different career stages among women professionals in Latin America
- Increase the visibility of regional work and contributions
- Promote strategic partnerships to expand impact and resources
Through these efforts, WiLATAM hopes to contribute to a more inclusive, connected and resilient scientific community, addressing regional needs and empowering the next generation of professionals.
ACTIVITIES
As part of its initial activities, WiLATAM organized two virtual meetings involving participants from across Region 9. The first meeting, held on April 7, introduced the initiative and launched a survey aimed at understanding the needs and expectations of women and gender-diverse communities in the region. The second meeting, held on June 16, provided a space to discuss the survey outcomes, foster collaboration among members, and define priorities for the development of the 2026 work plan.
