Maria’s Reflection: Reflections on a 5-Day Journey in Bangalore for InGARSS and Participation in IDEA

As I sit back and ponder over my recent five-day journey to Bangalore for the InGARSS event, I am filled with a sense of profound gratitude and enrichment. The trip was not just a physical journey to a new destination, but a voyage into a world brimming with new experiences and perspectives.

From the moment I arrived in Bangalore, I was enveloped in a tapestry of vibrant colors, exotic aromas, and the rhythmic cadence of a bustling city. Each day brought with it new flavors to savor – both literally and metaphorically. The local cuisine, with its rich spices and diverse textures, was a delightful exploration of taste. More than the food, it was the people of Bangalore who added the most flavor to my journey. Their kindness and gracious hospitality were heartwarming. In every smile and every gesture, I found a welcoming spirit that transcended language and culture.

The congress was another realm of discovery. Being surrounded by a diverse group of individuals, all passionate about their fields, was exhilarating. The warm reception I received there was a testament to the inclusive and open-minded nature of the attendees. Engaging in discussions about cultural differences between India and the West was not just intellectually stimulating; it was an exercise in breaking down barriers and building bridges of understanding. These dialogues challenged my perspectives and broadened my worldview, making me realize how every culture has its unique beauty and complexities.

Perhaps the most transformative experience of my trip was participating in the Women Mentoring Women program. Sharing my journey, with its ups and downs, victories and challenges, was a deeply humbling experience. It was a reminder of how far I’ve come and how many hurdles I’ve overcome. Speaking to a room full of aspiring women, sharing insights and lessons learned along my career path, was not just about imparting knowledge; it was about igniting a spark of hope and ambition. The program created a shared space for vulnerability, strength, and inspiration. It highlighted the importance of mentorship in shaping careers and lives. As I shared my story, I could see the impact it had, kindling a sense of camaraderie and empowerment among the participants.

This trip to Bangalore was a journey of growth, learning, and connection. It reinforced the power of effective communication, and the incredible strength that lies in women supporting each other. It has left an indelible mark on me, both professionally and personally, reminding me that every step we take in unfamiliar territory is an opportunity to learn, grow, and empower not just ourselves, but those around us as well.

As an improvement for the IDEA program, it would be beneficial to schedule the encounter at the beginning of the conference. This timing would be advantageous for all interested parties, as it would provide more days for attendees to fully immerse themselves in and internalize the wide array of programs offered. Starting the program at the onset of the conference would allow participants to better leverage the opportunities for learning, networking, and engagement throughout the entire duration of the event.
