Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters (GRSL)
In an effort to reduce the time required to publish shorter topical papers, the
IEEE/GRSS solicits the submission of original papers for Geoscience and
Remote Sensing Letters (GRSL). GRSL papers may not exceed 5 pages (single
space, two columns with 3-5 figures) in length. Each paper will receive
at least 2 reviews and will be published electronically immediately upon
acceptance and then will appear in print quarterly. GRSL encourages papers
addressing new ideas and formative concepts in remote sensing as well as
important new and timely results and concepts. In addition we encourage
the incorporation of "extended objects" or "multi-media"
such as animations to enhance the shorter papers.
Dear GRSL readers and authors,
I would like to thank all of you for helping to establish Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters (GRSL) and build it over the past 5.6 years into a strong and healthy science journal. When we started in early 2003 the only confirmation we in the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) we had that GRSL was a good idea was a survey taken at the end of 2002 that suggested that our community was ready for a "letters" format journal dedicated to remote sensing. It became my task to propose GRSL to IEEE only to have it rejected at first due to society financial reasons not for any concern about the journal. So for 2003 GRSL was published as a part of the Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing (TGRS) which was possible under IEEE rules. Fortunately in late 2003 the GRSL proposal was again considered by IEEE and was accepted for a start as a new journal in January, 2004. For the first few years (2004-2006) GRSL handled on average about 30 - 50 papers at any one time. This has now grown to over 100 papers as submissions have increased considerably. We received our first Impact Factor this year which at 1.14 was not as high as I wished, it was still higher than a number of longer lasting remote sensing journals.
I am stepping down as Editor in Chief at the end of December but the new GRSL EIC, Dr. Paolo Gamba of the University of Pavia will continue the growth that GRSL has experienced. He has been an Associate Editor of GRSL since it began in 2004 and is very familiar with the workings of the IEEE Manuscript Central. His close ties to European remote sensing will bring a fresh outlook to the EIC position. I will remain an AE for both GRSL and TGRS but have already started handing over the day-to-day journal activities to Dr. Gamba.
So again thanks for your support.
Sincerely,
Bill Emery
