The position involves studying the importance of different predictors on thunderstorm nowcasting with special emphasis on the future observations of the MTG sounder and imager mission by using similar measurements from GOES ABI, GOES GLM and IASI/CrIS/AIRS. The successful candidate will also extend the multi-sensor thunderstorm nowcasting algorithm COALITION-3 by applying cutting edge machine learning techniques and datasets comparable to MTG. Duties also include: preparing detailed technical documentations and taking part in the deployment of new algorithms and in knowledge transfer activities.
- University degree in Meteorology, Geophysics, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Geosciences or equivalent.
- Experience in satellite remote sensing, convection in the atmosphere, precipitation, cloud physics, nowcasting, and advanced machine learning.
- Strong programming skills will be a significant asset. This includes good and proven practical knowledge of programming languages such as Python, data processing, software development tools such as version control systems and tools for runtime optimization, parallel processing on super-computers, experience with GPU-driven machine-learning software including container software as well as experience with performing scientific simulations, and their evaluation.
- Candidates must be able to work effectively in English, both verbally and written. Additionally, it is strongly desired that the candidate is able to communicate efficiently in one of the Swiss official languages Italian, German or French.
