SUMMARY:5th EARSeL Workshop on Remote Sensing of the Coastal Zone
DESCRIPTION:Conference Site: http://www.earsel.org/SIG/CZ/5th-workshop/index.php It is now widely acknowledged that coastal zones\, including inland waters and land-ocean interfaces\, represent a fragile environment\, sensible to climate changes and human activities. However\, current capabilities of remote sensing methodologies are often far from quality requirements which are necessary for monitoring environmental parameters in coastal zones both in terms of accuracy and temporal or spatial resolution. The 5th workshop focuses on the impact of recent climate changes on European coastal zones and inland waters\, and on the contribution which new technologies and methodologies can give to improve the capabilities of the remote sensing to operate in coastal zones to detect climate changes and rapid (interannual) variations of key coastal environmental parameters. Topics: changing terrestrial run-off into coastal waters escalation of extreme coastal events: floods\, storms\, high tides hydrology and water budget evolution of rivers and lakes increasing temperatures in inland and coastal waters impact of vaying physical forcing on morphodynamics and ecosystems new developments of habitats\, biodiversity and alien invaders fluxes and fate of seawater constituents\, including pollutants role of Coastal Zone Management in adapting to climate change

SUMMARY:4th EARSeL Workshop on Remote Sensing for Land Use & Land Cover
DESCRIPTION:Conference Site: http://www.earsel.org/SIG/LULC/index.php Land use and land cover have been one of the first and main products from remote sensing data. Its dynamics are strongly influenced by socio-economic factors and political decisions\, generating a need for adequate mapping and monitoring tools. As a consequence\, robust and sophisticated analysis methods are required for accurate information extraction and fast and efficient data analysis adopted to the rapid advances in image and sensor technologies. Furthermore\, multi-temporal and multi-sensor approaches are becoming more and more important not only for change detection but also for more detailed classification approaches. The EARSeL Special Interest Group on Land Use and Land Cover (SIG LULC) aims to bundle methodological and application-oriented research activities in this thematic field. The workshops shall form a platform for scientific exchange and discussion on a variety of related topics. The SIGs intention is to further foster a better integration of science results into operational products and processes. Hence\, the SIG welcomes contributions from users\, service providers and value adding industry. We also aim at linking with the various European initiatives in the land cover sector as well as on-going core services within the EU GMES and ESA ECV programs. Topics: • Classification • Change detection • Pre-processing for LULC applications • Accuracy assessment in LULC applications • Large-scale land cover initiatives (e.g. state-wide inventories\, Europe\, global) • specific requirements of LULC in Mediterranean and Developing countries

SUMMARY:3rd EARSeL Workshop on Remote Sensing in Education and Training
DESCRIPTION:Conference Site: http://www.earsel.org/SIG/ET/3rd-workshop/index.php Remote sensing of the earth covers many topics that are significant for all natural science disciplines in school and university curricula. Satellite imagery and data derived from satellite sensors are available for studies of local phenomena around schools\, up to large-scale perspectives showing the diversity of nature in the various climate regions on earth. This allows thus to point out the dependence between local and global scales. Remote sensing data are used to observe and understand actual conditions on earth\, but they also allow us to outline the methods for predicting future developments – e.g. of the climate system – with models. All relevant institutions and interested individuals are invited to participate. In particular the workshop is also addressed to the Global Environment and Security (GMES) programme of the European Commission and the European Space Agency. The success of GMES services and information products\, especially in the fields of environment\, climate change and natural disasters depends on specific training activities which include remote sensing for earth observation as a core element. Topics: Earth observation for kids Earth observation and its associated use to support science education at schools\, high schools and universities Environmental science as a tool in cooperative learning and teaching\, in enquiry-based learning and in other educational practices for tomorrow's schools Earth observation and its use as educational support in areas like biology\, chemistry\, geography\, physics and mathematics curricula in the classroom but also in continuous individual learning Training activities in GMES\, with a focus on environment\, climate change and natural disasters\, in GEOSS\, and other international programmes Earth observation and its use for public outreach of Environmental Sciences and Global Change

SUMMARY:EARSeL 7th Workshop of EARSeL Special Interest Group “Imaging Spectroscopy”
DESCRIPTION:Conference Site: http://www.earsel2011.com/Welcome/ Imaging spectroscopy (IS) brings a new dimension to the field of remote sensing by enlarging the envelope of point spectrometry into a spatial domain. It now provides a tangible perspective for adding spatial detail to spectral information\, thereby enhancing the thematic application of spectral recognition algorithms. This capability can be provided either from far or close distances\, such as those acquired by satellites or by microscopic sensors\, respectively. Whereas the former is used for mapping the earth from space\, the latter is used for mapping micro targets such as microorganisms and cell bodies in order to account for their biochemical processes in a spatial domain. Topics: Existing and future orbital IS sensors Existing and future airborne IS sensors Image processing methods and tools New analytical techniques Data fusion Calibration and validation Towards commercialisation of the technology Applications in terrestrial ecosystem remote sensing Applications in inland water and hydrology Coastal and marine ecosystem applications Atmospheric applications Climate change and IS technologies Urban applications Agriculture Geology and soils Hazards and risks

SUMMARY:ICST 2011
DESCRIPTION:International Conference on Space Technology From Event Website: After the success of the first International Conference on Space Technology\, which also resulted in a special issue on Space Technology of IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing\, the second event is going to happen almost two years later. The proliferation of micro-satellites has made space affordable and accessible to many people. Space technology\, therefore\, spans a broad area of research and development\, from electronic components for satellites to intelligent systems for on-board data analysis. Most of the satellites face the Earth rather than the outer space. From home electricity meter readings to disaster monitoring\, surveillance and crop forecast\, satellites play a very important role now in our daily lives. It has also become increasingly evident that a lot has to be gained by considering the whole pipeline of sensors\, data collection\, data processing\, conclusions drawing\, actions taken\, rather than try to solve individual problems in isolation. This series of conferences is designed to bring together people who work on different aspects of space technology research\, in hope that the interactions along this chain of activity will be facilitated and enhanced. SUMMARY:MRRS-2011
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd Microwaves\, Radar and Remote Sensing Symposium (MRRS-2011) From The Event Website: The 3rd Microwaves\, Radar and Remote Sensing Symposium (MRRS-2011) continues the series of very successful events of MRRS-2005 and MRRS-2008. The first MRRS was held in September 2005 and gathered together about 100 participants from 18 countries in Kiev. During the second MRRS-2008\, which was again conducted in September\, 74 papers from 20 countries were presented and discussed by 120 participants. After numerous consultations with our colleagues from different countries we decided to conduct MRRS-2011 again in Kiev but this time in August 25-27 taking into account thorough coordination with other events in our field and Kiev weather. We expect excellent conditions for successful MRRS-2011. The Symposium is planned to be a forum of ideas exchange and results discussion in the field of electromagnetic theory and applications; microwaves; radar technology\, systems and signal processing; remote sensing methods and data processing. Both passive and active methods and systems of all frequency bands are welcome. SUMMARY:MultiTemp 2011
DESCRIPTION:In the last decade a large number of new satellite remote sensing missions has been launched resulting in a dramatic improvement in the capabilities of acquiring images of the Earth surface. This involves an enhanced possibility to acquire multitemporal images of large areas of the Earth surface\, with improved temporal and spatial resolution with respect to traditional satellite data. Such new scenario significantly increases the interest of the remote sensing community in the multitemporal domain\, requiring the development of novel data processing techniques and making it possible to address new important and challenging applications. Nonetheless\, the properties of the images acquired by the last generation sensors (e.g. very high geometrical resolution\, large time series of images\, etc.) pose new methodological problems that require the development of a new generation of methods for the analysis of multitemporal images and temporal series of data. This is common to both passive (multispectral\, hyperspectral\, etc.) and active (synthetic aperture radar\, lidar\, etc.) sensors. The potentials of the technological development are strengthen from the increased awareness of the importance of monitoring the Earth surface at local\, regional and global scale. Assessing\, monitoring and predicting the dynamics of land covers and of antrophic processes is at the basis of both the understanding of the problems related to climate changes and the definition of politics for a sustainable development. The enhanced capability to perform multitemporal analysis of local areas at a very detailed scale is put beside these global themes and represents another strategic area of application. The goal of MultiTemp 2011\, as well as the ones of the previous editions\, is to provide a forum of discussion of scientific\, methodological\, and application issues related to multitemporal data analysis. The workshop aims to push novel solutions for technical problems related to the analysis of multitemporal data and to promote the use of the multitemporal images in an ever increasing number of strategic and challenging applications\, strengthening the connection between the scientific community and the end-users. In this perspective contributions are welcome from the methodological community dealing with novel technologies and methods for data analysis as well as from the application sectors focusing on using multitemporal data in practical settings. Workshop Topics Contributions on all the issues related to multitemporal data processing\, to the analysis of time series acquired by passive and active sensors and to the related applications are welcome\, including: Multitemporal image calibration\, correction and registration techniques Multitemporal image analysis techniques Classification of multitemporal data Analysis of time series Data mining in time seriesChange detection methods Change detection accuracy assessment Multitemporal SAR and InSAR data analysis Fusion of multitemporal data Land-cover and land-use dynamics Phenology monitoring Applications of multitemporal data and time series New satellite missions for acquiring time series Important dates Extended Abstract (2-4 pages): 25 February 2011 Notification of acceptance: 30 April 2011 Registration Opening: 30 April 2011 Submission of camera ready papers: 15 June 2011 Early Registration Deadline: 15 June 2011 Contact Information Prof. Lorenzo Bruzzone multitemp2011@disi.unitn.it http://www.multitemp2011.org/

SUMMARY:The Third Summer School in Spectrum Management for Radio Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Click here for a pdf version of this post The 1st Circular of The Third Summer School in Spectrum Management for Radio Astronomy National Astronomical Observatory of Japan\, Mitaka\, Tokyo\, Japan 31 May - 4 June\, 2010 Sponsored by NAOJ (to be confirmed)\, IUCAF\, CRAF and RAFCAP The purpose of the 3rd IUCAF Summer School is to offer a comprehensive view of both technical and regulatory issues related to radio astronomers' use of the spectrum. Spectrum management is a task of rapidly growing importance\, for radio astronomy as well as for other radio services; however\, it is normally not part of the academic curriculum. At least for radio astronomy you have to learn it by doing it. The IUCAF Summer School will be an opportunity to profit from the experience of colleagues\, who have been doing it for some years. The expected audience would be members of the radio astronomy and related radio engineering community\, who are becoming active in this area at the local\, national or international level\, and regulators whose task is to protect passive services and science services. Venue: Meeting room in COSMOS kaikan (COSMOS hall)\, NAOJ Scientific Organizing Committee: M. Ohishi (Japan)\, A. Tzioumis (Australia) \, H.Y. Zhang (China)\, S.H. Chung (Korea)\, T. Gergely (USA)\, H. S. Liszt (USA)\, A. Clegg (USA) \, W. van Driel (France)\, K. Ruf (Germany)\, and W. Baan (The Netherlands) Local Organizing Committee: M. Ohishi (Japan) Purpose of the Summer School: Nearly 80 years passed since K. G. Jansky first detected radio emission from the Galaxy\, while searching for the origin of the weak static that was causing interference to communications. Since then\, radio astronomy has revolutionized our view of the Universe through the discovery of quasars\, pulsars\, the Cosmic Microwave Background\, and the survey of our Galaxy in the 21-cm line\, molecular lines and many other phenomena. The radio window was the first non-optical window in the electromagnetic spectrum to be explored\, and radio techniques continue being a prime tool in mankind's' exploration of the Universe. At the same time\, radio astronomy remained closely linked to the world of radio communications\, adopting some of its leading technologies\, and sometimes giving rise to technologies of its own that were adopted by radio engineers for commercial applications. During the 20th century\, radio astronomers enjoyed relatively easy and interference free access to large portions of the spectrum\, by locating telescopes far from potential sources of man-made noise. A small number of specialists took care of regulatory issues that arose in national and international forums\, that rarely required attention from the broader astronomy community. This state of affairs has been changing rapidly in the 21st century\, as demands on the spectrum increase due to huge increases in the demand and availability of wireless applications (mobile phones\, Wireless LANs\, and others)\, communications satellites and marketing of new technologies\, such as ultra-wide band systems\, power line telecommunication systems\, cognitive radio systems. The development and health of radio astronomy depend critically on astronomers' continued access to the radio spectrum\, and this in turn demands that astronomers and particularly radio observatories pay closer attention to the technical and regulatory issues that arise in relation to managing the radio spectrum\, particularly as they relate to radio astronomy. However\, spectrum management is not only necessary\, but it is also interesting and sometimes even challenging. It requires a combination of scientific motivation\, technical background\, legal knowledge\, and diplomatic skills\, which is normally not taught at university. At the IUCAF Summer School a number of experts will illuminate many of these different aspects for the benefit of new colleagues interested in this field. Capacity of the Summer School: Due to the limited capacity for accommodations at the Mitaka campus of NAOJ and vicinity\, participation in the summer school may be limited to 40 persons. Preference will be given to younger radio astronomers and engineers\, who are or expect to be involved in spectrum management activities. SUMMARY:25th International Cartographic Conference
DESCRIPTION:In 2011\, France will host the 25th Conference of the International Cartographic Association\, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the first General Assembly of the Organization. During these fifty years\, the ICA has skilfully remained true to its two fundamental objectives\, namely\, to maintain its position as the benchmark international conference for cartography and geomatics\, thanks to its solid and progressively updated scientific content\, whilst remaining a conference which is open to a variety of participating groups: researchers\, decision-makers in the field of geomatics\, teachers and lovers of cartography. To this end\, the conference is structured in four segments: The conference proper\, comprising some 500 oral presentations over five days\, organized in themed sessions which reflect the twenty-eight commissions and working groups of the ICA. Scientific workshops organized by the commissions of the association. An exhibition for the presentation of the players involved in geomatics: suppliers of softwares\, hardware\, data bases and maps\, consultancy firms\, geomatic educational institutions or publishers. Two exhibitions of maps\, one showing the most recent products from some fifty countries\, and the other of children’s drawings. In its organization of the ICA in July 2011\, on the theme of an Enlightened view on Cartography and GIS\, the French Committee of Cartography is seeking to combine thematic diversity\, high-quality contributions and an up-to-date content: Diversity will be ensured by the thematic variety of the twenty-eight commissions and working groups\, ranging from the most theoretical (theories of cartography and spatio-temporal modeling) to the most practical (production lines\, new softwares\, participative data bases and NeoGeography or data law). The quality of contributions will be ensured by a process of selection which will encompass both a leading-edge scientific audience and a broader public\, thanks to the delivery of three types of presentations: reference presentations\, selected from full-length papers by the scientific committee\, will be published in a scientific volume for distribution at the conference selected presentations from abstracts. These papers will be published in digital form posters will also be produced in digital format The latest scientific and technical developments will be extensively represented\, with an emphasis on new theories and practices associated with cartography\, geomatics and information technology. Consideration of the links between Web 2.0 and geographic information will have its place\, as will the links between art and digital cartography. By inviting the major scientific and industrial players in the fields of Cartography and GIS to Paris in 2011\, we hope to provide all parties with a better insight into both the history and the current state of our field\, together with an opportunity to participate in the future development of a sector which is essential to public security\, the sustainable development of the entire planet and the fulfilment by each individual of their role as a global citizen. SUMMARY:American Meteorological Society - 90th Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The 90th AMS Annual Meeting will be held 17–21 January 2010 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta\, Georgia. Eric Barron\, Ed Olenic\, and Marshall Shepherd are the 2010 Annual Meeting Cochairpersons\, leading the organization of the meeting. The 2010 Annual Meeting is being organized around the broad theme of “Weather\, Climate\, and Society: New Demands on Science and Services.” Recent international\, national\, and regional assessments\, as well as recent observed trends\, make it clear that the weather and climate of the twenty-first century are unlikely to be comparable to what human and natural systems have adapted to during the twentieth century. Currently\, global societies are struggling to address adaptation and mitigation issues related to changes in ecosystem services and socioeconomic services compounded by ongoing and projected changes in climate and weather extremes. Nonstationary (evolving) weather and climate present many scientific and service challenges. Increased predictive capabilities are becoming more critical for protecting life and property\, promoting economic vitality\, national defense\, and enabling environmental stewardship. Weather and climate services\, including communication with users of the data\, data management\, forecasts\, projections\, and education\, are likely to play an increasingly important role in the development of socioeconomic and defense policies\, industrial and military operations\, and the motivation for the emergence of new economic opportunities. SUMMARY:IGARSS 2006
DESCRIPTION:In 2006 IGARSS returns to North America to the exciting city of Denver\, Colorado. This important western U.S. city is not only the capital of Colorado but also a central location for science and technology distributed along the Front Range from Fort Collins in the north to Colorado Springs in the south. Just northwest of Denver is Boulder where the main campus of the University of Colorado is located\, along with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research facility. Boulder is also the home to Ball Aerospace while other aerospace companies such as Raytheon and Lockheed-Martin have major facilities in the greater Denver area. There are many other remote sensing technology companies located in the Front Range\, adding to the rich science fabric of the region. For this conference we have received over 2400 abstracts from scientists the world over who will be coming to Denver to experience the Rocky Mountain High and the facilities of the newly expanded Colorado Convention Center. We have divided the technical program into half invited sessions and half general sessions and anticipate a good attendance at both. The Technical Program Committee meeting was held in San Juan\, Puerto Rico where the many abstracts were organized into oral and interactive sessions. This effort as always has been supported by a large number of remote sensing scientists and we greatly appreciate their efforts on behalf of this conference.

It is our task to observe the earth’s environment\, and it is the work of geoscience and remote sensing technology to aid us in this task. We cannot touch the stars\, but we can explore them by remote sensing technology. We are surrounded by many different types of frontiers. Remote sensing is a technology that can expand our knowledge beyond these frontiers. We can observe the earth’s environment on a global scale\, beyond that which can be seen through our own eyes. Subsurface sensing that is applied below the surface of the ground and the ocean\, and even beneath the surface of man-made construction\, provides us with knowledge of the unknown world. Boundaries between countries have no meaning when the earth’s environment is observed by remote sensing technology. In addition to the observation\, technologies to store and utilize the information are also quite important for earth’s environment. We hope IGARSS2011 will provide you with the opportunity to think about how we can expand our frontiers. We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver in July 2011. SUMMARY:IGARSS 2009
DESCRIPTION:The venue for IGARSS 09 has been chosen as the University of Cape Town on the slopes of Table Mountain. The choice of Cape Town\, the first time that IGARSS will be held on the African continent\, represents a milestone in the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society’s strategic objective to broaden international participation\, particularly in the developing countries. Awarding this Symposium to Africa is a tangible and committed step to engage African governments\, institutions and individuals in the powerful global network of GRSS earth science and remote sensing specialists. At a stage when many regions of Africa are emerging from dark periods of civil strife and regional conflict\, it is an appropriate moment to embrace the possibilities of remote sensing and associated sciences as tools in development\, environmental protection\, health\, good governance\, disease and poverty alleviation. A broad alliance of African states\, ranging from Algeria to Nigeria to South Africa are cooperating in their new national programmes of space science and Earth Observation\, with several small satellites launched or in the planning and construction stages. To meet the human resources needs of these new programmes\, young scientists need to be introduced to and become part of the international remote sensing community. The holding of this IGRSS Symposium in Africa will provide a magnificent opportunity to foster these interactions. IGARSS 09 in Africa will not be happening in isolation. Africa has its own complementary disciplinary societies: the African Association for Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE) and EIS-Africa\, which organisations will be partners in hosting the international community in Cape Town. Over the past five years\, through a series of training workshops and conferences on remote sensing technologies and applications we have been building up a momentum towards IGARSS 09. Members of the GRSS have made significant contributions to these development efforts. It is thus with great pleasure on behalf of the GRSS\, IGARSS 09 Local Organizing Committee\, the Universities of Cape Town and Johannesburg and associated institutions that I invite you to start planning your participation in our annual symposium for Cape Town in 2009. The programme for Cape Town will have several special sessions\, in addition to maintaining continuity of traditional GRSS themes. We hope to celebrate ten years of MODIS Earth observations\, and to take stock five years into the GEOSS programme. On the technical side\, we will organise special sessions on microsatellites. In terms of African development\, several sessions on applications will address disaster preparedness and response\, global change and adaptation\, good governance\, role of RS in health and disease monitoring\, water and food security\, forest and fire monitoring\, and urban planning. We invite you also to bring your families. Cape Town is one of the world’s premier tourist destinations\, with a wide range of activities. We will plan a family friendly programme that will cater for children\, wine lovers\, outdoor enthusiasts\, culture aficionados and more. Prof Harold Annegarn\, General Chair July 2008
