IEEE GRSS Kolkata Chapter: Current Activities& Future Perspective

Video

GRSS Kolkata Chapter, India demographically covers 13 provinces of India, specifically the eastern part and the northeastern part of India.  This chapter has been very proactive in reaching out to different parts through lectures, IEEE Distinguished Lectures, organizing workshops, conferences, and seminars. This chapter also organized the International schools and workshops through the Chapnet program where a few GRSS chapters from across the globe joined the activity.  In this program, speakers from India as well as different other countries shared their expertise with the delegates of the school. This exposed our GRSS members as well as others interested in this related field. This program not only also augmented the participants with the state of the art research but also helped in motivating researches to come to the umbrella of GRSS. This was continued in 2018 and 2019 as well. The workshops, seminars, lectures, and international schools also provided an opportunity for scientist and researchers from the national laboratories and Industries to get updated with recent state of the art technology. During the process two student chapters could be formed; one at Kolkata and one at the Gangtok, Sikkim, the northeast part of the country. The students were also greatly benefited by different lectures. Different activities also motivated to have one more student chapter at Kolkata.  In 2019 we had the specific plan to reach out to northeast states and as a result, we had a national workshop and Distinguished Lectures at Sikkim University, Gangtok, Sikkim.  The Chapnet program of 2019 was a great success in roping in experts from different International chapters.  The outcomes of these activities are twofold; the first one is the increase in membership and the second one is connecting our members of different provinces.  This effort of the leaders of the chapter resulted in bagging the IEEE  Chapter leadership award and the Chapter excellence award in the year 2019.  The executive committee members meet periodically to review and plan different activities.

Though this year the leaders of this chapter had different plans but due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the plans are redrawn and all the activities are now on online modes. We have planned to have a series of lectures in online mode stretching till the month of December 2020.  We had already completed two lectures through the Google meet platform. These lectures are by different experts from our Kolkata Chapter as well as other chapters of India. This effort serves as a catalyst for activating our members and connecting them together. Besides, we have planned to have two National Level workshops during the month of September and October 2020 and one Chapnet program in November 2020.  Though initially, it was apparent that this year’s activities will be jeopardized   by COVID-19 pandemic, different activities are planned in online mode to connect our members and make our chapter a vibrant one.
