Description: The GRSS establishes the GRSS Highest Impact Paper Award (HIPA) to recognize the author(s) who have published during the past five years in an IEEE GRSS Journal the scientific paper that has received the highest number of citations and impact over the past 5 years as measured by the Thomson Reuters Web of Science citation index. A previously selected paper shall not be eligible for this award in the following years.
Administration: IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS).
Eligibility: Technical/scientific papers published in an IEEE GRSS Journal by author(s) who are a GRSS member at the time of publication. Eligibility and the selection process shall comply with procedures and regulation established in IEEE and Society governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations.
Award Items: Certificate and check for US$3,000. In case of multiple authors, each will receive a certificate, and the cash award will be shared among the co-authors.
Frequency: The award shall be presented annually for one paper, if a suitable paper is identified.
Funds: The award is funded through the IEEE GRSS budget. The award will only be given in a year if the Society budget is net positive with the inclusion of the award.
Nominee Solicitation: Papers published up to five calendar years previous are screened for their number of citations. The screening is performed with Thomson Reuters Web of Science for the IEEE GRSS Journals:
- IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing
- IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters
- IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Award Committee: The IEEE GRSS Awards Committee reviews the highest cited papers and ranks the best five, based on the citations criteria and impact. The IEEE GRSS AdCom approves the award in its spring meeting. Should no paper meet Awards Committee standards, then the HIPA will not be presented that year.
Schedule: By mid-December, the Awards Committee Chairperson will obtain the citation rankings of all GRSS journals. The Publications Awards Committee (PAC) shall rank the best five papers before early February. The GRSS AdCom approves the winning paper for the Highest Impact Paper Award in its spring meeting.
Presentation: The award shall be presented at an awards ceremony during the next IGARSS.
Publicity: A feature publication will be published in the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and/or in the GRSS Magazine.
Timetable: The following time table shall be the guideline:
